“Last week, 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya, who is black, was shot by a white police officer during a traffic stop for license plates that did not belong to the vehicle. For those who may not be aware, swapped license plates generally give police pause that the vehicle may be stolen,” Red Voice Media reported.
“Police released body cam footage of the incident on Wednesday, which showed Lyoya and a white officer in a physical struggle that appeared to be over the officer’s taser.
Lyoya was told multiple times to get back in the car when he jumped out as soon as he stopped driving. The officer asked Lyoya if he spoke English, which he advised that he did. The video shows the officer and Lyoya discussing whether Lyoya had a driver’s license. Lyoya opened the passenger door to the vehicle and asked his passenger to hand him his license.
Before Lyoya gets the license from the passenger, he closes the car door and starts to walk away from the scene. The officer moves to grab Lyoya, at which point the suspect attempts to run away.”
The unidentified officer yells for Lyoya to stop and tackles him on a lawn, yelling, “Stop resisting!” The body cam footage clearly shows Lyoya attempting to grab the taser the officer is holding.
Police Chief Eric Winstrom said that the taser was fired twice during the interaction but did not make contact.
A Taser is a deadly weapon. Im sorry he died but all Patrick Lyoya had to do was not fight the police officer and he would be alive today. Civil Rights activists should advise others to stop fighting the police and start cooperating. That would be #JUSTICEFORPATRICKLYOYA. https://t.co/sRkMPkMqMU
