“Now, some in our party feel that as presiding officer of the joint session, I have the ability to reject or return electoral votes certified by the states,” Pence added. “The vice president has no such authority before a joint session of Congress under the Constitution.”

Former President Donald Trump had urged for him to reject votes in places where he was still in power.

“And the truth is, there is almost no idea more un-American than the idea that any single person could elect the president of the United States,” Pence added. “And I will always be proud that on that awful day, we did our share to reassemble the Congress and fulfill our constitutional obligations.”

While speaking at a conservative gathering, Pence was booed by Trump fans.

According to a new book, he also complimented a Trump aide who slammed the president over his response to Charlottesville.

“Cohn warned Trump that his lack of clarity had been destructive to the country, and that he’d put a great amount of strain on individuals working in the White House,” the author wrote. He informed Trump that he may have to resign. No one stood at Cohn’s side. Others in the room, including Vice President Pence, were deafeningly quiet.”
