A spokesperson for Buttigieg later walked back that assertion, telling reporters that a “variety of solutions need to be on the table to ensure we can invest in our highways and build employment, but raising the gas tax is not one of them.”
Buttigieg went on to say that in the past, Congress has dealt with trust fund shortfalls by allowing frequent contributions from the general fund. “I’m not sure Congress will want to keep doing that, and I believe we need a compromise that will provide some predictability and continuity in the near term,” he said.
