State Rep. Ilhan Omar was detained and put into the Hennepin County Jail “to avoid additional criminal conduct,” according to a recently discovered police report.
On January 18, 2013, Omar and a group of Somalis accompanied former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy from the Minneapolis Convention Center to the Hotel Ivy, where he was scheduled to spend the night.

According to the police report, hotel officials requested police assistance in clearing the lobby, and those without room keys were asked to leave immediately. The majority of the people in the lobby complied with the order, according to the responding officer, but Omar was “argumentative” and refused to leave the premises.
“As she stood her ground and refused to go, I took hold of her left elbow to guide her from the lobby,” according to the police report. ‘Don’t put your hands on me!’ Omar said as he backed away from me. Others in her company followed my orders and began walking toward the front entry/exit door, and I was able to pull Omar out as well.”
The officer discovered Omar seated in a different portion of the foyer ten minutes after he first saw her. When the officer told her she had to leave or face being arrested for trespassing, she remained stubborn, according to the officer.
When she refused to leave, the officer arrested her. Omar pulled away from him as he reached out to help her up and cuff her, and he was handcuffed while sat in the chair.
“I felt it was likely that Omar would fail to answer to a citation, and she also proved that she was going to continue her unlawful behavior,” the officer wrote.
