Pope Francis lashed out at the Big Tech recently this week, calling them out for reporting “fake news” and promoting “hate speech”.
“In the name of God, I ask the technology giants to stop exploiting human weakness, people’s vulnerability, for the sake of profits without caring about the spread of hate speech, grooming, fake news, conspiracy theories, and political manipulation,” Ope Francis stated.
Yahoo News reported that
“The Pope called for universal basic income, shortened workdays, the end of media “disinformation,” the abolition of the weapons industry, the release of patients from vaccine manufacturers, and for countries to avoid “neo-colonialism.”
The Pope also praised those who protested against the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, calling them “collective” Good Samaritans.
“I persist in my pestering,” he said. “It is necessary to confront together the populist discourses of intolerance, xenophobia, and aporophobia, which is hatred of the poor. Like everything that leads us to indifference, meritocracy, and individualism, these narratives only serve to divide our peoples, and to undermine and nullify our poetic capacity, the capacity to dream together.”
“If so-called technological progress were to become an enemy of the common good. This would lead to an unfortunate regression, to a form of barbarism dictated by the law of the strongest. The common good cannot be separated from the specific good of each individual.”
The pope concluded his statement by saying that “a better world is possible thanks to technological progress if this is accompanied by an ethic inspired by a vision of the common good, an ethic of freedom, responsibility, and fraternity, capable of fostering the full development of people in relation to others and to the whole of creation.”
