The Ukrainian PResident, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the American Congress for the America First approach, before engaging into military interventionism.
On March 16th, Zelenskyy appeared virtually before Congress for approximately 15 minutes, pleading for the United States to help Ukraine in their efforts to fend off the Russians.
During his address before Congress, Zelenskyy made light of the issue regarding his desire to have the United States enforce a no-fly zone.
“Is this a lot to ask for, to create a no-fly zone over Ukraine to save people? Is this too much to ask for?”
The reality is, dragging the United States into enforcing a no-fly zone is indeed a lot to ask, as it would move us beyond the likes of sanctions and military aid by way of funding and place us into a position of possibly getting involved in an armed conflict with potential nuclear ramifications.
In response to these calls from Zelenskyy, Rep. Greene stated that a “more level-headed approach” is needed in these sorts of foreign endeavors.
“It is time for a more level-headed approach to foreign engagements from America’s elites, and time we loosened the military-industrial complex’s stranglehold on our politicians and our policymaking.”
The congresswoman acknowledged that the actions taken by Putin “are despicable,” but that we as a country can’t allow emotional reactions to the disturbing images of war and conflict cloud our judgment so much so that it results in irrational responses.
“There is no doubt that Putin’s actions in Ukraine are despicable and evil. We weep when we see images of men, women, and children wounded or killed. We regret any human suffering, and we mourn any loss of human life. But we cannot and we must not allow our compassion to blind us to reason and common sense.”
Rep. Greene’s rationale for suggesting that we, as a country, not jump the gun into offensive military action is because the situation between Russia and Ukraine is not as black and white as it is being portrayed to be.
“Because this won’t be like any entanglement America has ever entered into before. A potential war with Russia is not comparable to Iraq or Afghanistan. This is an eight-year-long, smoldering conflict in which peace agreements have been routinely violated by both sides.
“It concerns a country in which Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Mitt Romney have direct financial interests—a country whose government only exists because the Obama State Department helped to overthrow the previous regime.”
