Kevin McCarthy Was Informed That Trump Wants to Be Speaker of the House: Here’s What He Said

There are numerous theories circulating about former President Donald Trump’s next move, some of which are rather bizarre, to say the least.

Is he planning to run for president again in 2024? Will he instead launch his own digital media conglomerate, complete with a huge new social media platform? Will he run for Senate in the United States?

And my personal favorite, “Trump can be installed as Speaker of the House” if the GOP retakes control of the chamber next year, placing him second in line to the White House – that rumor goes in all kinds of directions from there.

Only President Trump knows the answer to these speculations at this time. The last one, on the other hand, has a flaw: Kevin McCarthy, R-California, is one of the House Minority Leaders.

McCarthy is set to replace Nancy Pelosi, one of Congress’ main poster children for term limits, if Republicans are successful in retaking the House next year as they expect. And he appears to be serious about becoming Speaker.

According to the Daily Caller,

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy allegedly indicated on Friday that former President Donald Trump has his sights on the House Speaker’s gavel, sparking uncertainty.

McCarthy, who would be first in line to be the next Speaker of the House if Republicans won control of the body in 2022, was asked by Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade what he thought about speculations that the former president would also express interest in the role.

Kilmeade said he’d heard “talk out there” about Trump running for a House seat or becoming Speaker of the House.

He asked, “Would you support President Trump becoming Speaker?”

McCarthy responded, “You know, I’ve talked to President Trump numerous times.” “He says he wants me to be speaker, and I believe he should be president,” I say.

However, several journalists were perplexed by the answer, leading them to believe that the rumor was accurate.

“KILMEADE: ‘Would you be for President Trump becoming Speaker?’” CNN’s Ryan Struyk tweeted. MCCARTHY: ‘You know, I’ve had numerous conversations with President Trump.’ He says he wants to be the speaker. And I believe he is deserving of the presidency.’

“This is the first time I’ve seen anyone concede that Trump aspires to be Speaker of the House. McCarthy has openly admitted this, which I find surprising,” noted Punchbowl News co-founder Jake Sherman.

Democratic operative and cum lawyer Marc Elias tweeted, “Every Republican House candidate running in 2022 should be asked, on the record, if he or she would vote for Trump for Speaker.”

“A spokesman from McCarthy’s office confirmed the statement to the Daily Caller, explaining that he had meant Trump wanted McCarthy to be speaker: ‘McCarthy meant it when he stated he wants ‘me’ to be Speaker, but I recognize it may not have come across as crystal clear.

“McCarthy then went on to declare that regaining control of the House should be the top goal in 2022,” according to the site.

To be fair, Trump said earlier this month that the idea of him being elected Speaker (you don’t have to be a member of Congress, by the way) was “interesting.”

But, by any rational measure, our money is on Trump staying in his role as political kingmaker for the time being, and on McCarthy becoming Speaker of the House in January 2023, before deciding whether to run for president the following year.
