The new policy announced that the FDA loosened the restrictions on the dangerous chemical abortion, dug mifepristone and removed the in-person dispensing requirement, and allowed the abortion pill to be permitted by mail.
Previously, the drug could only be taken in specified medical facilities to be provided under direct doctor supervision. The restrictions were implemented to ensure that the woman was really pregnant, that she wasn’t pregnant longer than 9 to 10 weeks, etc. It prevented the pills from being used to kill—the unborn babies of unsuspecting pregnant women.

In April, the Biden- Harris admin started a non-enforcement of that policy, stating that the pandemic interfered with women who wanted an abortion.
The new policy alters the FDA’s REMS for mifepristone. The FDA stated that its REMS safety protocol was created to regulate “certain medications with serious safety concerns to help ensure the benefits of the medication outweigh its risks.”
“Abortion activists’ longtime wish has been to turn every post office and pharmacy into an abortion center,” said Sue Liebel. “Women who take chemical abortion pills are significantly more at risk of serious complications and more likely to require a visit to the emergency room. Some women even die.”
The mifepristone distribution has been restricted because of the pandemic. The last CDC analysis said that from 2017, the chemical abortion drug has accounted for 40% of abortions per year.
The FDA stated that there were many complications from the mifepristone, 24 deaths, and thousands of side effects reported to the FDA. Analysis shows that the FDA’s side effect reporting system concluded that the numbers were undercounted.
“The rate of abortion-related emergency room visits following a chemical abortion increased over 500% from 2002 through 2015, according to an analysis of Medicaid claims data.” A recent peer-reviewed study stated. It added, “the rate of abortion-related ER visits is growing faster for chemical abortions than [for] surgical abortions.”
The FDA’s loosening on the restrictions appeared once the Senate’s hearing of Biden’s nominee for FDA commissioner, Dr. Robert Califf, happened. He was queried about mifepristone’s safety and the FDA’s deliberations about loosening restrictions on dispensing the drug. He said that he had great confidence in the scientists who studied the drug.
Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins denounced the admin’s calculated moves to increase chemical abortion. “President Biden has stacked the deck with radical chemical abortion supporters leading America’s healthcare systems, starting with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra who led a coalition effort against the FDA health and safety standards while he was attorney general of California, and again, in choosing Dr. Califf to head the FDA on Becerra’s watch. It’s clear that reckless change is in the works.”
