Here’s Anthony Fauci’s statement on the new variant and its connection to the vaccines.
“I would not be surprised if it is,” Fauci said when asked if the new variant is already in the US.
“We have not detected it yet, but when you have a virus that is showing this degree of transmissibility and you’re already having travel-related cases that they’ve noted in Israel and Belgium and other places, when you have a virus like this, it almost invariably is ultimately going to go essentially all over,” Fauci said Saturday on NBC’s “Weekend Today” show.
“The vaccines that we use may very well be able to contain this, and then [Omicron] won’t be as serious as some people are surmising it might be,” he said. “A lot of unknowns, which is the reason why we’re all over this.”

Also, Pfizer on Friday stated that they will know its vaccine effectiveness against the new ‘Omicron’ variant within a couple of weeks.
“We expect more data from the laboratory tests in two weeks at the latest. These data will provide more information about whether B.1.1.529 could be an escape variant that may require an adjustment of our vaccine if the variant spreads globally,” BioNTech said in a statement.

If the current Covid vaccine has to be reworked to protect against the new variant out of South Africa, Pfizer said it can have a new vaccine shot ready to be shipped within 100 days.
