Neera Tanden, who nominated as the first ever woman of color in American history to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has officially backed down from the race. She withdrawed her nomination, probably because her prospects in the Senate have flamed out…
“I have accepted Neera Tanden’s request to withdraw her name from nomination for Director of the Office of Management and Budget,”current President Joe Biden announced. “I have the utmost respect for her record of accomplishment, her experience, and her counsel, and I look forward to having her serve in a role in my Administration. She will bring valuable perspective and insight to our work.”
Though the White House made crucial efforts this past few weeks to clear a path for Tanden’s confirmation, they haven’t succeeded. Thus, she will probably be appointed in some “normal administrative role” – one that doesn’t need the confirmation from the Senate.
In two Senate confirmation hearings, Tanden apologized for comparing Senator Mitch McConnell to Voldemort, and Senator Ted Cruz to a vampire (hahaha), promising to be more open for collaboration with them. As funny as it might sound – she tweeted these comparisons. (I find them hilarious)
And thus, her nomination started to fall … First – Senator Joe Manchin pulled his support, then Senator Susan Collins followed and the last ditch was “performed” by Senator Lisa Murkowski – stating that the White House never asked for her to back up Tanden…
Some of the Democrats have regarded that the Biden candidates who are overlooking the greatest level of scrutiny areactually people of color, such as Xavier Becerra and Representative Deb Haaland.
“Is there a pattern here??? Hope they’re using the same standard and not moving goalposts for only certain nominees,” Representative Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) asked in a tweet, right after Manchin came out with his statement regarding the nomination of Tanden.
The budget office still remains without a leader.
