On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed Bill Cosby’s indecent assault conviction and ordered his release from prison, ruling that he was denied protection from self-incrimination.
According to the court, a prosecutor’s decision not to arrest Cosby, 83, in a previous case allowed him to talk freely in a lawsuit against him, believing that he would not incriminate himself legally.
The civil testimony was later used in a criminal prosecution by a second prosecutor, and that testimony was crucial in his conviction years later.
The news of Cosby’s release sparked indignation on both sides of the political spectrum.
